Location: Lincoln Hall 1135, Pomona College, Claremont CA
Description of Space:
Room 1135 is a ground floor classroom in Lincoln Hall. This building houses Psychology, some Environmental Analysis offices, and the intercollegiate departments of Africana Studies, Asian American Studies and Chicana/o-Latina/o Studies. The room is a medium sized, largely rectangular, but with many protrusions. The ceilings are around 10 feet high. The East wall is made largely of windows as it faces out onto North College Way. The classroom is filled with three rows of tables with chairs facing a podium at the South of the classroom.
Recording Setup: The recorder (Azden SGM-PDII Camera Shotgun Mic) was set on top of one of the desks in the center of the room, which was about 2.5 feet above the ground. The balloon popped around 3 feet away from the recorder, about 3 feet above the carpet floor.
Reverberation Time:
- Maximum Intensity: 90.86 dB
- Minimum Intensity: 41.44 dB
- 30 dB decay: 0.49 seconds
- 40 dB decay: 0.69 seconds
- Decay to background level: 1.01 seconds
Acoustic Description:
The classroom space creates a predictable reverberation, but with a few specific details that add to its complexity. There are more than four walls in the room, being close to a rectangular shape, so it has much more than four corners. There are desks and chairs across the whole room, a plastic/wood material and standard classroom chairs, all on top of the carpet floor. These features both emphasize (the walls) and lessen the reverberation (the carpet). Overall, because the space is completely enclosed, there is a very noticeable echo.
