Patio of Dom’s Lounge

Location: Patio of Dom’s Lounge (facing Stover Walk), Pomona College, Claremont CA

Description of Space:

The patio of Dom’s Lounge features a flat concrete area with tables and chairs leading into tiered seating and an inclined grassy area. It provides a seating and gathering area outside of Dom’s Lounge, a space often used for community events. The patio is below the level of the Stover walk, the grassy area it faces out to. There is a small overhang outside of the exit of Dom’s Lounge after which there are no overhead coverings, but it contains walls on three sides.

Recording Setup:  The recorder (Azden SGM-PDII Camera Shotgun Mic) was placed on table 4 feet above the ground and the balloon was held 4 feet above the ground and approximately 3ft apart in the patio of Dom’s Lounge approximately 3 yards from the exterior of the Lounge.

Reverberation Time:

  • Maximum Intensity: 89.80 dB
  • Minimum Intensity: 47.23 dB
  • 30 dB decay: 0.40 seconds
  • 40 dB decay: 1.07 seconds
  • Decay to background level: 0.73 seconds

Acoustic Description:

The patio space of Dom’s lounge creates an environment with a mostly open area for the sound waves to go into without reverberation, with the exception for the floor and angled walls of the area. Moreover the grassy incline in turn absorbs the sound. This contributes to the relatively quick decay to background level, 1.07 seconds, following the balloon pop. There is a random spike in decibels, 64.74 dB, at .34 seconds following the balloon pop, which is the sound of the popped balloon hitting the table in the patio.
